Got 2 write a paper on climate change. Got a cool feeling about it.
As early as the late 1980s, research began on the impact of climate change on the global ski tourism industry (Lamothe 1). A vast, regionally-diverse network of resorts, multi-national conglomerates, and mom-and-pop operators make up the global ski industry. In the Twentieth Century, winter sports and leisure became synonymous with the alpine towns and communities that cater to visitors who enjoying skiing, snowboarding, and a variety of related activities. Now, in the Twenty-first century, the winter-tourism business model is threatened by the impending climate crisis, caused by increases in anthropogenic CO2 emissions. For decades now, climate scientists have expected the planet expected to warm by several degrees Celsius with a doubling of CO2 (Lamothe 1). Now that the science has been confirmed and a doubling of CO2 is probable in the next few decades, the ski industry—like every other segment of society—is left to deal with the probable consequences. This paper discusses the ways the industry can, and must, adapt to maintain viability in the face of climate change on a massive scale.
